Set a goal for buying local food in county institutions, and ask school districts to do the same

0 of 100 neighbors0%

At 100 signatures it’s printed, with the count by town, and handed to the Melbourne Beach Town Commission (Mayor, Vice Mayor + 3 Commissioners) at a public meeting.

The same ask is open in 92 counties in 10 states — 0 signatures across all of them. Each county's petition goes to its own officials and counts toward its own goal; together they show how many places want the same thing. See every county →

Why it matters

U.S. schools bought $789 million of local food in the 2013–14 school year, up 105% in two years, according to USDA. Districts with farm-to-school programs spent about 20% of their food budgets on local food (USDA 2019 Farm to School Census). We ask Melbourne Beach to set a local-food buying goal for the jail and other county institutions, and to ask school districts to do the same.

What’s happened

Raised by residents — not yet carried to the county.

This is a petition to your elected officials — like the clipboard at the courthouse door. It does not put anything on the ballot; that takes the state’s official petition process. Signatures are counted, not verified — one per browser; the delivered copy removes duplicates. Like everything here, petitions can’t campaign for candidates or ballot measures, or name county staff.
